How do I find the right toy wand for my cat?
Which toy wands cats prefer to play with varies from cat to cat. Shy cats tend to prefer longer wands, such as the various models from PURRfect. For bold, adventurous cats, a short wand like the Cat Dancer might be just the thing. The shorter the toy wand, the more direct the contact during play and the stronger the bond that develops between human and animal. Ultimately, as a cat owner, you must assess how much closeness your cat allows during play. You should also consider whether your cat finds feathers, pendants, strings or sounds particularly stimulating. If you cannot answer this straight away, you can simply test it out whilst playing together. In any case, you should look for natural materials, as cats like to chew on their prey after catching it. Good build quality is also important. Under no circumstances should small parts come loose when the cat is playing wildly with the wand or chewing on it.
Once you’ve found the right toy, a fishing rod can easily stimulate your cat’s hunting instinct. Unlike electronic toys, which cats also enjoy chasing, a fishing rod focuses on playing together. This means you can control just how intense the play or chase becomes. Alongside the low purchase price, this is the biggest advantage of fishing rods over electronic hunting toys. Depending on your cat’s age, health or fitness level, you can control how much exercise your feline companion gets whilst chasing the fishing rod. This allows you to consciously design and vary the training session.
Tip: Buy a small selection of different fishing rods. What cats find great fun for a certain period of time may suddenly lose its appeal from one day to the next. In that case, you can introduce new stimuli with a different fishing rod or a replacement lure from Nekoflies, which will get your cat interested again. However, even a ‘discarded’ toy shouldn’t be thrown away straight away. After a few days or weeks’ break from a particular toy, it may suddenly become as interesting as it was before.
