What you should know about organic cat litter

Organic cat litter protects the environment

In Germany alone, about 630,000 tonnes of cat litter are disposed of in household waste every year. Using organic cat litter can reduce the burden on waste disposal and waste incineration. Organic cat litters are made of natural raw materials and are completely biodegradable. They can be composted or disposed of in the toilet due to their water solubility.

In addition, organic cat litters such as SoftCat and Classic Eco Cat are particularly powerful and economical, which means that excellent results are achieved with little use of litter and raw materials.

Organic cat litters are lightweight

With the same or better performance, biological litter is considerably lighter than silicate or bentonite litter. This is due to the weight of the base material, which is considerably less in the case of litter made from grasses. You will feel the advantage directly when you go shopping, if you are used to heaving heavy litter bags from the supermarket into the car and then into the home. So the advantage of the lower weight is felt immediately when you go shopping.

Adhesion and tracking

Tracking is often cited as a negative characteristic of ecological cat litter, especially in connection with longhaired cats. Due to its structure and low weight, organic litter can adhere more strongly to the paws and fur of longhaired cats. Therefore, in certain cases, it may be advisable to additionally use a litter mat, such as Omega Paw, when using a biological litter.
Of course, tracking is a nuisance to many cat owners, as it means that stray cat litter contaminates the home. But it is worth taking another look at this issue. After all, the impact on the home and the increased need to clean it are only one aspect of litter spreading in the home. Another aspect is the possible health effects for humans and cats.
First of all, it must be taken into account that litter build-up cannot be avoided one hundred percent, completely independent of the type of litter used. This means that silicate, bentonite or grass fibres are distributed over the fur. Cats are very clean animals that clean their fur by licking. With silicates or bentonite, it is therefore possible that these substances are absorbed through the cleaning of the coat. In the case of dust-rich bentonite litter, this dust can adhere to the fur and be licked off, even if fine dust is not noticed at first glance. This can lead to health problems in the digestive or respiratory tract. Licked up natural litter, on the other hand, is not harmful and does not cause any health problems.
If the litter is spread around the house, this can be particularly unpleasant if there are small children or babies living in the household. What is true for the cat when swallowing the litter is equally true for small children. There are no health risks associated with ingesting organic litter. Before making a purchase decision, it is therefore important to weigh up the arguments surrounding the subject of tracking very carefully.

Suitability for kittens

As described, the consumption of organic litter is completely safe for humans and cats. In addition, our natural litter does not contain any allergenic additives or other ingredients that are dangerous for kittens. For this reason, we recommend the use of natural litter for kittens and young cats.

Dust-free filling of the litter tray

In addition to the low weight, natural litter has another big advantage when it comes to filling the litter tray. Organic cat litter is completely dust-free. Especially for asthmatics and people with lung diseases, filling a cat litter tray with a dusty bentonite litter can be a problem. Of course, there are also great differences in dust formation with bentonite litter. But those who may even be allergic to the dust should go straight for a natural litter like SoftCat
